Matthew 25:1

Matthew Henry wrote that the Jews at that time had a marriage custom in which the bridegroom and his retinue would come to for his bride in the middle of the night, while the bride's maids waited to light the way. It certainly fits the parable, but I don't know what his source was.

He speculated that they usually had ten of these maids, but that is only speculation. The number isn't arbitrary. Two virgins would have made the point just as well. The number 10 has either cultural or theological significance. Could it be an allusion to the ten menorahs in Solomon's temple?

Proverbs 22;6, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Too many people think this verse only applies only to teaching children about our Creator. Nothing could be further from the truth. We should be instructing our children in all ways, the current “let them decide for themselves” method is creating disaster after disaster in societies around the world. Some believers have been tricked into allowing their children to choose whether they want to go to school, what sex they want to be, and even allowing them to try to become some animal rather than human. All of this is degrading life around the world. Parents have a responsibility to teach their children, not dominate their every move, but properly instruct them. Without proper instruction, we see the confusion and disorder that results. But parents also have the responsibility to be instructed by our heavenly father so that they are better equipped to pass along that knowledge to the future generations.

Thought for Today: Shabbat February 12:

YHVH is all around you, hovering over you even as you seek His Face. He is closer than you dare to believe and closer than the air that you breath. If all His children could only recognize His Presence, they would never feel lonely again. He knows every thought even before you think it, every word even before you speak it. His Presence impinges on your inner-most being. Can you see the absurdity of trying to hide anything from Him? You can easily deceive other people and even yourself, but YHVH reads you like an open, large-printed book. Deep within themselves, most people have some awareness of His imminent Presence. Many people run from Him and vehemently deny His Existence, because His Closeness terrifies them. But YHVH’s own children have nothing to fear because He has cleansed them by His Blood and clothed them in His Righteousness. Be blessed by His intimate nearness. Since He lives in you, let Him also live through you, shining His Light into the darkness.
