And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.
Genesis 38:6
"Tamar" means "palm tree". Was she chosen by God (and named) for her upright character? Judah chose a much better wife for his sons than he did for himself. Pity his sons weren't worthy of her.

So Hanukah starts in a few days! Here are our thoughts.
First of all, we try to teach our children truth. We see no need to teach them legends when the truth is so incredibly exciting. So I have written the story of the Maccabees in a way that is appropriate for children. “Jonathon’s Story” recounts the true story of the Maccabean Revolt in 8 chapters, one for each day of Chanukah. You will be carried off with the faith, the emotion, the victories. Each day also has a few activities to enjoy together as a family. Great heroes are worth learning about, and it’s great to have fun while you learn.

Yet again she bore a son, and she called his name Shelah. Judah was in Chezib when she bore him.
Genesis 38:5
The name Chezib in this verse means false or deception, so Judah was literally in Deception out of town when his wife bore Shelah. Maybe Shelah wasn't really his son.
