It's interesting that God spoke directly to Abimelech through a dream in Genesis 20. He didn't speak through a prophet and the dream required no interpreter. It was just God and a Philistine king. The following text indicates that Abraham and Abimelech had a great deal of respect for each other. I wonder if the Philistines weren't so bad at first and, like the Israelites, were corrupted by their Canaanite neighbors.

According to Abraham they were bad enough that he feared for his life; and Abimelech said one of them "might lightly have lien with thy woman". Though God testified that Abimelech was innocent, I don't think God or Abraham agreed that it was a "righteous nation". I think it was probably the case of a righteous but detached and too-trusting and indulgent king (like Ahasuarus).

Blessed are You Adonai Eloheinu, for You have created us out of Your love for Your pleasure. Even when, in our sins and foolishness, we go against You and leave You, You are there and seek us out in love. Blessed are You our Father and King. Loving Father, may Your Church throughout this world show Your love for all peoples and nations. Bless all who seek to heal divisions and to do away with prejudice. Give courage to all who reach out to those in need and who seek to welcome the rejected. May Your Church reflect Your saving love. Father, we ask forgiveness for the sins and arrogance that divides us and create barriers between You and us and between nations and peoples. We pray with love for all minority groups, for all who are judged by their race, colour or history. We pray for all who are refugees, homeless or outcasts of society. We ask Your blessing upon all who bring a new unity and understanding between divided peoples. Loving Father we thank You for our homes, our jobs, our daily bread and for all who have accepted us in love and generosity. We ask Your blessing upon our homes and the community in which we live. We pray for all who are suffering from broken relationships and all who feel estranged from the world around them. Father, we give thanks for our health and our wellbeing. We ask Your blessing on all who are injured or ill at home or in hospital. We pray for those who suffer from autism or schizophrenia and all who are mentally ill. We ask Your blessing upon all who are separated from their loved ones through illness or distance and all who feel rejected by their loved ones. We ask Your blessing and comfort on all who have recently lost a loved one to death. Father, in Your redeeming love, You accepted us and welcomed us, we ask then that You will grant us joy and peace and may all people of this world know the fullness of Your salvation. To You and Your love we commit the whole world, our loved ones and ourselves. We pray this in the Mighty Name of our Saviour, Yeshua Moshiach, amein.

I pointed out the connections between Lot and the Exodus earlier. There are close parallels between the stories of Lot and Rahab also: They were both sinners living in wicked cities, but they believed in the God of Abraham. They both protected two men and saved some members of their own families from destruction. See Genesis 19 and Joshua 2.

Snip from my #Bible reading this morning in #psalm 113, with an application to this week's #Torah portion, #Vayeira.

[YHVH] humbles Himself to behold the things that are in heaven, and in the earth. Psa 113:6

TO HUMBLE is Strong’s H8213 שפל shaphal, a primitive root meaning, “to be or become low.” The 3-letter root is shin + pey + lamed.

shin ש = two front teeth, thus sharp, press, eat, two, again
pey פ ף = mouth, thus open, blow, scatter, edge
lamed ל = shepherd’s staff, thus teach, yoke, to, bind

The story: The pey + lamed tells of speaking (pey) to one in authority (lamed) in order to plead a case, redress wrongs, or simply to ask for an extension of undeserved mercy, as Abraham went before YHVH to plead the case for the righteous of Sodom. When someone comes before authority to make such a request, they bow themselves down to acknowledge the greater in authority, power, and status. The shin is acting as a multiplier, multiplying (shin, x2) the lowliness of the one who is bowing himself down (pey + lamed), thus indicating the lowest of the low.

YHVH humbles Himself to behold us, and He raises up the humbled (vs. 7).
