It has been a while since I've done a new CvB. This winter, I noticed an uptick in people using the account in John 10 to say that Jesus/Yeshua celebrated Hanukkah.

Now, if you want to celebrate/memorialize/whatever the holiday, go for it. However, just like I am pointing out in the comic, to say Yeshua was celebrating it is adding to the text. Just because He was walking around the Temple during that time does not indicate that He was celebrating it in any sense, no more than it proves He didn't celebrate it. In fact, this verse is the only mention of the holiday in Scripture and there is no talk of traditions, anyone celebrating, or anything else. Just a time stamp, which seems to be all this verse is trying to let us know. When this account in John 10 happened.

I hear you. However, we do have historical sources that indicate not only did the Jews celebrate it, but they also had a tradition that Mashiach would be revealed during that time at that location. That is why, in the next few verses, they ask Him about whether He is the Mashiach.

While the Bible is my final authority, I find we often need the historical context to fully understand some aspects of it. you are correct. The Bible itself does not say one way or the other. But there is a lot of strong historical information that fits with the Bible to indicate the Jewish people celebrated it. The rededication of the Temple was a huge deal. It would be more odd if they did not acknowledge it in some way, especially since they are good at acknowledging other anniversaries.

Now, as for the specific traditions in celebrating, that's a whole different story. I know folks who have studied all of this and, if I remember correctly there is some uncertainty about what got started when.

Yahuah doesn’t care for Judaism. Both the first writings and the second writings express this. Just because a Jew did it doesn’t make it right. Ethnicity doesn’t change Yahuah’s Torah. Yahuah tells us not to celebrate the fall of our enemies and yet that is all Hanukkah is about. A garbage tradition nullifying Yahuah’s Torah!!

, not sure what you mean by coming from a different religion. I follow YHWH the Bible and it is the Bible that informs my practice, not any particular religion. No, I do not believe in being part of a one world religion. The Hebrew word for name doesn't simply mean a designator. It also refers to one's character. Properly understood in context, the knowledge of Him and His character was to be spread throughout the world by the Jewish people. All Hebrew names have meaning. There are many pronunciations that are simply nonsense, devoid of meaning, which would be taking His name in vain. Even worse, some of the pronunciations people use actually have a negative or evil meaning. That, too, would be breaking the commandment of taking His name in vain. When we call ourselves His and yet do not live according to His ways, we are also taking His name in vain. I try to take care to make sure that any traditions I do happen to follow never go against Torah. Torah must always takes precedence over the traditions of people.
