The men of Ai trusted in their gods to protect their families too, but that didn't work out as well. The Aians didn't understand that their gods were created and/or imaginary beings just as subject to YHWH as Israel was or they never would have resisted.
God's judgment of a nation often looks like natural disaster, internal strife, or bad luck. Egypt could have spared themselves at any time during the #10plagues if they had repented. God hears the prayers of all nations if they repent and turn to Him.

Leviticus 23:7—8, “On the first day you are to hold a sacred assembly; you are not to do any regular work. For seven days you are to present an offering made by fire to the LORD. On the seventh day there shall be a sacred assembly; you must not do any regular work.” Although the feast is for seven days only the first day and the last day should no work be done, the other days work is expected to continue.

Father in the Name of Yeshua I pray and confess Your Word over my children and surround them with my faith -- faith in Your Word that watch over it and perform it. I confess and believe that my children are disciples of Moshiach, taught of Adonai and obedient to Your will. Great is the peace and undisturbed composure of my children because You Father, contend with that which is contends with my children and You give them safety and ease them. Father, Your will perfect that which concerns me. I commit and cast the case of my children once and for all over on You Father. They are in Your hands and I am positively persuaded that You are able to guard and keep that which I have committed to You. You are more than enough! I confess that my children obey their parents in Adonai as His representatives, because this is just and right. Therefore, my children are the head and not the tail, and they shall be above only, and not beneath. They are blessed when they come in and when they go out. I believe and confess that You give Your angels charge over my children to accompany, prevent and preserve them in all their ways. You Adonai, are their Refuge and their Fortress. You are their Glory and the Lifter of their heads. As parents, we will not provoke, irritate or fret of children. We will not be hard on them or harass them or cause them to become discouraged, sullen or morose or feel inferior and frustrated. We will not break or wound the spirits, but we will rear them tenderly in the training, council and admonition of Adonai. We will train them in the way they should go, and when they are old, they will not depart from it. Adonai, how excellent majestic and glorious is Your Name in all the earth! You have set Your Glory on and above the heavens. Out of the mouth of babies, and un-weaned infants You have established strength because of Your foes, that You might silence the enemy and the avenger. I sing praises to Your Name, O Most High YHVH.
