Question 142: Who were the Pharisees?

Answer:

The Pharisees were a Jewish sect deriving their name from a word which means "separate" or "distinct" They were disciples of the Jewish sages, who held themselves aloof and claimed to keep rigidly the Mosaic laws of purity. They had many religious observances and believed in a future life of rewards and punishments.

Frequently asked questions and answers:

Question 141: Who were the Gentiles?

Answer:

Gentiles, which mean simply "peoples," was a term applied indiscriminately by the Jews to all other nations than themselves. After a time, it acquired a hostile meaning, as the Jews gradually drew themselves apart as a "holy nation." The term is used of "Galilee of the Gentiles," where some five nations other than the Jews were represented; the "Court of the Gentiles" outside the Temple area; the "isles of the Gentiles," etc.

I have a lot of notes and replies to things I've kept over the years. Something that I have shared quite a bit outside of the comics is a series of questions and verses to answer those questions. Each question and answer builds on each other. I am going to do a comic for each of these questions. This is question #3.

I love it.

I still don't understand how people can say that fulfill = abolish and yet Yeshua said in that same verse that He didn't come to abolish the Torah. ?

WORD FOR TODAY “is your heart hardened like Pharaoh’s?”: Exo 7:22 But the magicians of Egypt did the same with their secret arts; and Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and he did not listen to them, as the LORD had said.

SPOKEN VERSE FOR TODAY: Ecc 12:1 Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come and the years draw near when you will say, "I have no delight in them";

“Faith comes by hearing” positive frequencies spoken out loud hourly.

I always consider this hardening to be only about wanting to sin, but just consider that a person's heart can even be hardened not to consider that their own doctrine might be wrong.

How often do we stubbornly dig our heels in just to protect our own doctrines.

Galatians 5:6 says "in Christ Jesus, circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything", but Romans 2:25 shows that the "In Christ Jesus" severely limits the context. Circumcision has great value, whether it refers to being a Jew or being physically circumcised according to the commandment, but circumcision itself won't gain you any favor with God. That is dependent on your faith and the obedience that faith produces.

For circumcision indeed is of value if you obey the law, but if you break the law, your circumcision becomes uncircumcision. Romans 2:25 ESV For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision

That is a good point. There are many secular hospitals that circumcise baby boys for health reasons and then there are tribes doing the same. But that isn't the same as doing it on a Biblical basis.

We are so eager to keep the entire law to the best of our abilities and wants that we sometimes throw out parts of the Torah based on the New Testament interpretations of the laws.

Your quote of Romans 2:25 says it best: "For circumcision indeed is of value if you obey the law, but if you break the law, your circumcision becomes uncircumcision."

Circumcision under the law to this day still has the same value as in Biblical times. Even the New Testament writers don't say otherwise.

What it does mean is that being circumcised doesn't open any special doors if you don't keep the law.

"But the fearful and unbelieving, and the abominable and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone, which is the second death."

Have you looked into the "second death"? Is the death that is spoken of the same as the first death or is this "death" actually eternal life, but with eternal punishment; as per the doctrine brought in by the Roman Catholic church?
