Is it possible to disagree with someone, but still like them? What if the disagreement is over a deeply held belief - such as which holidays to celebrate, which political candidate to support, and which doctrines to follow? Disagreements come at us from all directions. The real test is how we handle them, as Barry and David discuss in this midrash.

And he will give their kings into your hand, and you shall make their name perish from under heaven. No one shall be able to stand against you until you have destroyed them.
Deuteronomy 7:24
Not even kings can stand against Israel when she is standing with God. (I'm not talking about the nation-state of Israel.)

The crown of the wise is their wealth, but the folly of fools brings folly.
Proverbs 14:24
Wisdom tends to bring material wealth, despite all the warnings in Scripture about wealth being a barrier to righteousness. This is the perennial cycle of civilization: Hard times make wise men. Wise men create easy times. Easy times create fools. Fools create hard times.
“Behold, the days are coming, declares YHVH, when I will punish all those who are circumcised merely in the flesh— Egypt, Judah, Edom, the sons of Ammon, Moab, and all who dwell in the desert who cut the corners of their hair, for all these nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised in heart.”
Jeremiah 9:25-26
Those who are circumcised in the flesh only might as well be uncircumcised. They are no better than pagans in God's eyes. What he really wants is a circumcised heart.

The death of the wicked isn't punitive so much as it's instructive. If God kills a man for his sins, he dies so that the living will see it and learn from it. We're supposed to learn from their deaths. Conversely, don't boast so much in the victories, life, blessings, and skills that God gives you, but in the God who gives them.
Three things that God loves:
1) Graciousness and generosity
2) Justice and mercy
3) Obedience to Torah
Jeremiah 9:22-24
