Numbers 27:8-11 define the line of inheritance of a man who dies without a son.
If he had sons, they would inherit all of the man's possessions at the time of his death. His daughters would probably have received smaller portions as their dowries.
If he had no sons, his daughters would inherit, and the property would be added to their dowries.
If he had no children at all, his father's sons would inherit, probably with preference to full brothers, as opposed to half-brothers.
If he had no children and no brothers, his grandfather's sons (his uncles) would inherit, or his cousins if his uncles were deceased.

A few lessons that can be derived from the story of Zelophehad's daughters:
-Sometimes women have better insight when the rules don't directly apply.

-Sons inherit first, then daughters, brothers, and male cousins in that order.
