A short excerpt from Cotton Mathers account that led to the first Thanksgiving in the US describes a drought in the spring. As the Puritans watched their plants wither they chose a day to fast and pray. This day began without a cloud in the sky but by evening a gentle and meaningful rain was falling. One of the natives who watched this commented the he now understood that their God was a loving God because when they danced for rain it came as a terrible thunderstorm. While much has been inaccurately portrayed about the “first Thanksgiving” the real accounts are far more meaningful than the fictitious stories or legends.
