The first job of a leader is to prepare his successor like Moses prepping Joshua to cross the Jordan. Moses led Israel to the Promised Land, but Joshua led them across the Jordan, into war, and to victory.
This was also a foreshadowing of the respective roles of Moses and Yeshua. Moses leads Israel to Messiah, but #yeshua leads them through death, resurrection, and ultimate victory. It wasn't possible for Israel to keep all of #torah until they crossed the Jordan with Joshua, and it isn't possible for us to keep all of Torah until we crossed over death with Yeshua.
