However, they did not drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer, so the Canaanites have lived in the midst of Ephraim to this day but have been made to do forced labor.

If Ephraim had succeeded in driving out the Gezerites, would Dan have had such a hard time taking control of their territory? Failures in any one tribe overflowed into the others. Eventually the Gezerites were completely absorbed into Israel.

Even though they were counted as separate tribes, the people of Ephraim and Manasseh were still intimately linked in the minds of the ancient Hebrews. Ephraim had more people than Manasseh, but they had a much smaller territory. Joshua compensated for this by giving Ephraim pockets of territory within Manasseh. They weren't the only tribe to be given bits of land within their neighbor's boundaries. Such arrangements probably served to strengthen the political and cultural ties between the tribes and lessen the chances of civil war.

The descriptions of the tribal lands of #israel as described in Joshua are confusing and scholars disagree on exactly where the boundaries were. That's not surprising. The geographical borders of all peoples were fluid and "fuzzy". They ebbed and flowed with the constant migrations, wars, and climate changes. The boundaries of the tribes were also intended to be approximate, with each tribe taking as much or as little as they were able, within reasonable limits.
