When Saul took David into his own house and wouldn't let him return to Jesse's house, he essentially adopted him. Although Saul didn't even understand the significance of his own actions, his son Jonathan understood that David would be king in his stead after Saul's death. Not only did he not resent it, but he rejoiced!
