Paul's use of the potter and clay analogy in Romans 9:21 is from Isaiah 29 that speaks of God's temporary hardening of Israel because of their sins. They blinded themselves with pride, so he blinded them further to ensure that his judgment would be carried out, with the intent that the nation would eventually repent and be restored.

What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid.
Romans 9:14
KJV translates adikia as “unrighteousness”, but injustice or unlawfulness would be as good. It isn’t just that God is the Law-Maker, but that the Law is a reflection of God’s own character. His instructions aren’t arbitrary. The form of every commandment is dictated by the form of the God who gave it.
Although the Law isn’t for his benefit and is tailored to our needs, we are made in God’s image, so that the Law is the written outline of God’s predestination of the believer to be transformed into the image of Christ.
As it is written, “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”
Romans 9:13 ESV
Love and hate in this context isn’t about feelings, but about favor. God showed favor to Jacob by giving him a covenant and a permanent inheritance. God showed disfavor to Esau by denying him the covenant and by bringing calamity on the land of Edom and eventually taking it away from him. This statement could just as easily be translated “Jacob I favored, and Esau I disfavored.” See Malachi 1:2-3.
Two topics we are taught to avoid in a social setting are politics and religion. The reason to avoid these topics is they are similar in that people hold very strong beliefs about both and will reject anything that does not conform to the way one thinks about either. There are numerous articles about how different they are but there are many similarities. People either love or despise political leaders no matter what nation we live in and people as well either love or hate religious leaders and it doesn’t matter which religion we may be addressing.
