Matthew 16:13-20 is chock full of controversial bits. Son of Man, Peter the Rock, Gates of Hell, keys to the kingdom, binding and loosing, etc. Did Jesus declare Peter to be the first pope? Or is there more to it? There is so much here to misunderstand if you don't approach the passage thoughtfully.

No doctrine can be authoritative unless it is firmly based in #torah.
How have you added to God's Law? Do you keep new "sacraments"? Have you invented new sins?
How do you subtract from God's Law? Have you rejected His holy days? Do you say that God doesn't care what you eat?

No amount of seeking will ever lead to wisdom unless it comes from God and his Law. He is the only source of true knowledge and understanding.
So these nations feared YHWH and also served their carved images. Their children did likewise, and their children's children—as their fathers did, so they do to this day.
2 Kings 17:41
They believed in God, but they didn't believe God. Partly because they had no one to teach them who God is and what he desires. It's not enough to fear YHWH. You have to obey his commandments, which means you have to seek them out and verify what you have been told.
