In Jeremiah 3, God tells Judah that he "divorced" Ephraim, the northern kingdom of Israel, but elsewhere he identifies all of Israel as his "firstborn son" and says that he divorced Ephraim's and Judah's mother. How are we to reconcile these contradictory metaphors?
The answer is simple: We reconcile them by recognizing that they are metaphors. A metaphor is an illustration that is not meant to be taken as literally true.
This article addresses a false doctrine that stems from over-literalizing the metaphors that the Bible uses to describe God's relationship with Israel:

News outlets include some sort of story about Artificial intelligence almost every day. A.I. has been used to examine the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Shroud of Turin and people are using it more often for various work and play. I have said and written that the word artificial is defined as fake. A.I. is nothing more than a very fast search engine that has the capability to search through the thousands of digitized documents that have been written by real people and summarize them within a few seconds. A.I. can be a useful tool but sadly many are treating it as a god.

The New Testament makes no separation between belief and obedience. They are linked together as one, because if you truly believe, you will truly follow. Trust makes us part of the Kingdom, but our love for God and obedience to His will are the badges of our citizenship in that eternal Kingdom. That is why the believer’s life is a happy blend of trust and toil, resting and striving, receiving and doing. God does His part; we need to do ours!
Moses said the Sinai covenant was made with everyone he was speaking to in Deuteronomy 5:1-5, but many of them hadn't been born yet when Israel stood at the foot of Mt. Sinai. The covenant is inherited by birth or adoption.
All those who come later, whether born into Israel or grafted in by faith, are considered to have stood at Sinai with that first generation of former slaves. The collective nation of Israel stood face-to-face with God at Sinai, and so did every individual Israelite who came after them.
