Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed. He divided the people who were with him, and the flocks and herds and camels, into two camps, thinking, “If Esau comes to the one camp and attacks it, then the camp that is left will escape.”
#genesis 32:7-8 #vayishlach

We struggle constantly to balance faith in God's plan with our own responsibility to act. God will preserve his people, no matter what we do, but he still expects us to maintain our roofs, prepare for winter, and even bear arms when necessary.

Like Abraham and Isaac before him, Jacob knew God's promises and believed them, but he didn't know exactly how they would be fulfilled. He acted with the best knowledge he had and God blessed him for it.

In the last comic I mentioned the Noahide Laws. I thought I would cover it several comics later, but I think it fits better here. The previous comic went into the fairness of having two different standards for two different groups of people. So, I don’t want to repeat that.

Instead, let’s look at the validity of the claim of these Noahide Laws. According to tradition, these laws were given to Noah and his sons during the making of the covenant with Noah. As all people are Noah’s descendants, these laws apply to everyone.

However, when we read the Genesis account and compare the 7 laws, only 2 are present. According to the Talmud, 4 others are taken from other passages in Genesis, and the last (the courts) was added.

Why wouldn’t everything be together like it is for the Torah? If all mankind was to follow this, wouldn’t it be laid out just as plainly?

I feel some look at these 7, which sound a lot like the 10 Commandments, and say “oh yeah, these are good things. I’ll get behind it.” And not dig deeper.

God is not a God of confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33). He does state plainly when it comes to laws: There is one Law (Exodus 12:49). This applies to those born Israelites and those who join with them in following God. (Romans 11, Ephesians 2)

I have a strong feeling about not running as in the Bible it is only during time of war or when a message had to be delivered that certain people ran. There is no instruction for staying "fit".

Yes, our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit, but that means you need to look after it and don't do things that will grief Him.

I also don't see any adult sheep that run to stay fit. Yes lambs will jump for joy, but that isn't to stay fit. The best cared for sheep are the ones that have a bit of "padding" on them. ?

I'd rather pray for peace and still pastures ahead of me than a nice day to go for a run. ?

"After this manner in time past did the holy women, which trusted in God, adorn themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands: as Sarah obeyed Abraham, and called him Lord: whose daughters ye are, while ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement."

That is a very interesting subject. If we look at when the Israelites left Egypt then they had nose rings in and Father says that He will adorn His bride again with a nose ring.

As part of their punishment, at that time, did Father instruct them to take off their jewellery and put on plain clothes. It was their punishment, but not a standing statute for all generations.

1 Peter3 : 3-4 “Don’t be concerned about the outward beauty of fancy hairstyles, expensive jewellery, or beautiful clothes. You should clothe yourselves instead with the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God.” and 1 Timothy 2:9-10 therefore doesn’t introduce a new law, but describes modesty and internal beauty.

In my view, there is nothing wrong for a woman to dress beautifully, as a well looked after woman portrays her husband’s or father’s care for her. There is however a big difference between a woman constantly dressing like she is going to a modelling competition and want to be alluring to other men and one who dresses smartly for the occasion. It is all about appropriate dress and modesty so that the internal “beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit” will shine more brightly.

Her tears were a strong but brief overflow, subsiding back to the quiet trembles. These she began to succeed in stilling by nestling tightly against Gareth's tempered immovability.

There was a squeak as one of Raleigh's crutches slipped, and a loud crack as he just saved himself from falling sideways.

"Sorry, Excuse me..." He cleared his throat, gestured, and blinked. Gibbsen was gratified that this human was at least perceiving some of the importance of the situation now. Enid smiled at Raleigh's apologetic display, and hid her face again.

Dr. Kilver, who had remained as fixed as a tree, now asked quietly,

"Gareth, would you like me to get anything for her... or both of you?"

Gareth shook his head.

"Send for Nurse Kley; she will be glad to arrange the necessities."

The doctor nodded, and went to speak to a mask-like face in the centre of a box of controls on the wall.

Raleigh asked Gareth what family he had, who might wish to know.

"Apart from Enid, only my father," Gareth said, and Raleigh made a gloomy grunt. Gareth's father was a political prisoner of Nova Atta - had been for nine years.

Enid brought her face a little from its hiding place and looked up, but her eyes remained barely open.

"I had a family, the time Moses was here. This time, again, I have a family."

Gareth gave her hand back to her, bent down, and took her up in his arms - easily, in a stately manner, without flourish. As he carried her away, she pulled a loose part of his robe over her head.

Gibbsen did not follow - in this case, he was certain that he did indeed count.
