FEELINGS OF SHAME
When should believers feel shame and when shouldn’t they?
We should feel shame as a result of guilt over sin:
Although Adam and his wife were both naked, neither of them felt any shame. -- Genesis 2:25. Have you ever noticed how little children can run naked through a room full of strangers without embarrassment? They are not aware of their nakedness, just as Adam and Eve were not embarrassed in their innocence. But after Adam and Eve sinned, shame and awkwardness followed, creating barriers between themselves and YHVH. We often experience these same barriers in marriage. Ideally a husband and wife have no barriers, feeling no embarrassment in exposing themselves to each other or to YHVH. But, like Adam and Eve -- 3:7, we put on fig leaves [barriers] because we have areas, we don’t want our spouse or YHVH, to know about. Then we hide, just as Adam and Eve hid from YHVH. In marriage, lack of spiritual, emotional and intellectual intimacy usually precedes a breakdown of physical intimacy. In the same way, when we fail to expose our secret thoughts to YHVH, we break our lines of communication with Him.
We should never be ashamed of our allegiance to Yeshua Moshiach:
If a person is ashamed of Me and My Message, I, the Son of Man, will be ashamed of that person when I return in My glory and in the glory of the Father and the holy angels. -- Luke 9:26. Luke’s Greek audience would have found it difficult to understand a god who could die, just as Yeshua’ Jewish audience would have been perplexed by a Messiah who would let Himself be captured. Both would be ashamed of Yeshua if they did not look past His death to His glorious resurrection and second coming. Then they would see Yeshua not as a loser, but as Adonai of the universe, who through His death brought salvation to all people.
We should never be ashamed of the Gospel – it is a source of Power:
I am not ashamed of this Good News about Moshiach. It is the power of YHVH at work, saving everyone who believes; Jews first and also Gentiles. -- Romans 1:16. Paul was not ashamed because his message was the gospel of Moshiach, the Good News. It was a message of salvation, it had life-changing power and it was for everyone. When you are tempted to be ashamed, remember what the Good News is all about. If you focus on YHVH and on what YHVH is doing in the world rather than on your own inadequacy, you won’t be ashamed or embarrassed.
What do I do with my recurring feelings of shame?
Psalm 32:5: -- Finally, I confessed all my sins to You and stopped trying to hide them. I said to myself, ‘I will confess my rebellion to Adonai.’ And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone. Acts 13:39: -- Everyone who believes in Him is freed from all guilt and declared right with YHVH. Romans 3:24: -- YHVH in His gracious kindness declares us not guilty. He has done this through our Moshiach Yeshua, who has freed us by mercy. 2 Corinthians 5:17: -- What this means is that those who become believers become new persons. They are not the same anymore, for the old life is gone. A new life has begun! Isaiah 54:4: -- Fear not; you will no longer live in shame. The shame of your youth and the sorrows of widowhood will be remembered no more. There is shame over past sin, which we refuse to give over to YHVH. There is also shame that comes from being victimized by someone else. For example, many women feel shame when they have been raped because they participated in a sinful act, even though it was not their fault. Shame is unreleased guilt. YHVH wants to release us from our shame and restore us to a pure and holy relationship with Himself.
What can help me to live today without shame and avoid shameful feelings in the future?
Psalm 25:2-3: -- I trust in you, my Elohiym! Do not let me be disgraced or let my enemies rejoice in my defeat. No one who trusts in You will ever be disgraced, but disgrace comes to those who try to deceive others. Psalm 34:5: -- Those who look to Him for help will be radiant with joy; no shadow of shame will darken their faces. Isaiah 49:23: -- Those who wait for Me will never be put to shame. Psalm 119:31: -- I cling to Your decrees. Adonai, don’t let me be put to shame! Psalm 119:39, 80: -- Help me abandon my shameful ways; Your Torah is all I want in life. …May I be blameless in keeping Your Principles; then I will never have to be ashamed. 1 John 2:28: -- Continue to live in fellowship with Moshiach so that when He returns, you will be full of courage and not shrink back from Him in shame. Only YHVH’s loving presence can remove our feelings of shame, so draw near to YHVH not away from Him.
Of what should I not be ashamed?
Mark 8:38: -- If a person is ashamed of Me and My message in these adulterous and sinful days, I, the Son of Man, will be ashamed of that person when I return in the glory of My Father with the holy angels. Romans 1:16: -- I am not ashamed of this Good News about Moshiach. It is the Power of YHVH at work, saving everyone who believes; Jews first and also Gentiles. 2 Timothy 1:8: -- You must never be ashamed to tell others about our Adonai. 1 Peter 4:16: -- It is no shame to suffer for being a Christian. Praise YHVH for the privilege of being called by His Wonderful Name! 2 Timothy 1:12: -- That is why I am suffering here in prison. But I am not ashamed of it, for I know the one in whom I trust and I am sure that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until the day of His return. We must never be ashamed of the only One who can forgive us and take away our shame.

Exactly when the Christian church began to teach the return of Jesus is something to look forward to is unclear. That doctrine is most likely founded on a misunderstanding of Matthew 24 especially verse 30, “At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and all the tribes of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.” Overlooking the surrounding verses gives the illusion of a could rider that we see in much of the artwork that depicts this. But even in this verse we see the people will mourn because they will finally understand what is happening.
Thought for Today: Thursday June 19
Our Adonai regards His followers as a select company who belongs to a different world from the rest of humanity. Many people in Yeshua’s day, were worldly and unspiritual, publicly parading their religion to impress others while privately dominated by pride, ambition, greed, and falsehood. Yeshua told His disciples they could not make their light shine by sinking to a worlds level. It was only by abiding in the Moshiach and living under the ruling power of His Ruach Kodesh that they could rise above the world. Only in that way could they be the Salt and Light to a decaying darkened world.
