For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John, and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come.
Matthew 11:13-14
The Law and the Prophets were focused on the moment of John's ministry. Not that their message ended with him, but that they all looked forward to the message he had to deliver concerning the Messiah. John came in the role and office of Elijah, calling the people to repentance and announcing the arrival of the Kingdom, as prophesied in Malachi 3-4 and by all of the preceding prophets.
From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and the violent take it by force.
Matthew 11:12 #yeshua
John prophesied the imminent arrival of the Kingdom, and all who believed him were eagerly looking for it, eyeing every prominent rebel and preacher to see if this might be the one. This violence isn't physical or malevolent violence, but the passionate and desperate response of people to the imminent arrival of the Kingdom. Some claimed ownership, while others grabbed hold of anyone who looked like they were in charge.

Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
Matthew 11:11
#yeshua was born of a woman and he was definitely greater than John, so I think his intent was that John was the greatest of all prophets.
• John was greatest among the prophets because he was closest in time to that which he prophesied, the coming of the Messiah. "The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand."
• The least in the Kingdom of Heaven is greater than John in two respects: He has witnessed with his own eyes the fulfillment of the greatest prophecies and he has stepped beyond anticipating the Kingdom into being an active citizen of the Kingdom.
