Every one of you shall revere his mother and his father, and you shall keep my Sabbaths: I am YHVH your God. Do not turn to idols or make for yourselves any gods of cast metal: I am YHVH your God.
Leviticus 19:3-4
If YHWH is your God, then keep the #sabbath on the 7th day as He commanded. If He isn't, if that other guy is your god (or you think you are), then do what you want (which is actually what he wants), "But as long as you live under My roof..."
When God adds "I am YHVH" to a command, he's saying "Do it because you're mine and it's what I want." Remember that God never changes.
A gentleman who owned a small estate wished to sell it. He sent for a real estate agent and asked him to produce an advertisement of the estate. When the advertisement was read to him, he said: "Read that again." The agent read the description of the estate once more, whereupon the owner of the property said: "I do not think I will sell. I have been looking for an estate like that all my life, and I did not know that I owned it."
Well, there are believers just like that. All the flowers that bloomed for them were the fragrant blossoms of truth. All the blessings that smiled upon them were gifts of their church. All the memories of childhood and motherly love trailed around her altars. Yet, some earthly advantage or convenience was force enough to snap the bonds. Now they are backslidden. "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do" (Luke 23:34).
A lady brought her little girl to a teacher that she might learn music. The child came up week after week without knowing her lesson, and finally the teacher appealed to the mother. "Does your daughter practice?" she asked. "No," replied the mother, "and I won't make her do it; I'd rather she would drift into music sort of naturally." Needless to say, she never drifted into it.
I am afraid that there are people who come into the faith with pretty much the same ideas. They make the start and then never give themselves any more concern. They expect to drift into sainthood.
A father took his little child out into the field one Shabbat, and he lay down under a beautiful shady tree, it being a hot day. The little child ran about gathering wild flowers and little blades of grass, and coming to his father and saying: 'Pretty! pretty!' At last the father fell asleep and while he was sleeping the child wandered away. When he awoke, his first thought was 'where is my child?' He looked all around, but he could not see him. He shouted at the top of his voice, and all he heard was the echo of his own voice. No response! Running to a little hill, he looked around but all he heard was his own voice. Then going to a precipice at some distance, he looked down, and there upon the rocks and briers, he saw the mangled form of his loved child. He rushed to the spot, and took up the lifeless corpse, and hugged it to his bosom, and accused himself of being the murderer of his own child. While he was sleeping his child had wandered over the precipice.
I thought as I heard that, what a picture of the Church of YHVH! How many fathers and mothers, how many believers are sleeping now while their children wander over the terrible precipice a thousand times worse than that precipice, right into the bottomless pit of hell?
Mom, Dad, where is your child tonight?
Every one of you shall revere his mother and his father, and you shall keep my Sabbaths: I am YHVH your God.
Leviticus 19:3
The command to honor our parents is the only one of the Ten Commandments to be accompanied by a specific promise. You can save yourself a lot of trouble by asking and heeding their advice. Mothers are given precedence here because it's easier to fear your father. Your mother's accumulated wisdom could spare you a lot of future pain. Pay attention.
