And YHVH threw them into a panic before Israel, who struck them with a great blow at Gibeon and chased them by the way of the ascent of Beth-horon and struck them as far as Azekah and Makkedah.

The Amorite kings were confident to fight Gibeon, a powerful city in its own right, but terrified before the loosely organized militia of Israel. They were afraid of Israel's God.
Note that, even though Israel trusted YHVH for the victory, they still had to fight the Amorites man to man with the standard military weapons of the day.
Faith & obedience in God sometimes means taking up arms.
