I've covered Romans 14 in a CvB comic. Romans 14 is often used to say we can eat whatever we want and we don't need to do the Sabbath anymore. However, both of these conclusions are far off from what is being said here.
As I say in a lot of my comics, context is important. We have to remember that these letters Paul wrote are to new believers. These are people that didn't grow up following what we call the Old Testament. They are trying to do what is best, but running into issues and needed guidance.
As I point out in this breakdown, the issue of concern is in the opening verses: to eat meat or to not eat meat. Why wouldn't they want to eat meat? Remember in Acts 15 when they were told not to eat what was sacrificed to idols?
And from the letter he wrote to the Corinthians we see that there was a concern with the meat that was sold at the market being sacrificed to idols. Some took this to mean they should only eat vegetables. This is what Paul is clarifying in Romans 14. It is not a commentary on saying we can now eat animals that God never intended for food.
We even see a similar conversation with the Pharisees and Jesus/Yeshua in Mark 7. They were stating if you didn't wash your hands, your food became unclean. Yeshua clarified that what God considers food, which is listed in Leviticus 11, is clean. God made it clean for us to eat during Creation. Us not washing our hands before eating, while gross, isn't changing the state of the food.
Just like the old adage goes: if it is a sin back then, it is still a sin today --- if it was food in Leviticus 11, it is still food today (same for not food).
