In Matthew 19, when Yeshua told the rich young man that he needed to sell all his possessions and give them to the poor, he was actually telling him that he needed to stop relying on himself for his own salvation. If this had been a desert-dwelling ascetic, Yeshua might have told him to start a business and earn a lot of money in order to be saved. Wealth, poverty, obedience, traditions, and even self-reliance can be good things in the proper context, but if you are relying on any of them to earn you a place in the Kingdom of Heaven, you will be terribly disappointed when the gates are locked to you. Whatever it is that you feel makes you "good enough" is the one thing that you need to give up.

I remember getting this idea at Sukkot. Sure, everyone knows the stories of Creation, of Noah, of Joseph, of the Exodus, Joshua, Samson, and so on. How many actually study the meaning behind these stories and the text surrounding them? Those of us that were raised in church were taught many of these stories in Sunday School. Taught in a way that makes them children's stories, rather than events that actually happened. Then, as we get older, we are told that the New Testament is the Old Testament revealed. Something that pretty much declares the Old Testament is no longer needed. If a puzzle has a solution printed with it and everyone just studies the solution, why try to put the puzzle together? You already know how to do it.
However, the Bible never tells us the OT is a puzzle or something that needs to be revealed. This idea comes from verses taken out of context like 2 Corinthians 3:14-16, which is using the events of Exodus 34 as a simile of those who read Scriptures, but reject the Messiah. It is not making new commentary about the OT.
I will tell you from experience, that when you read your Bible in context and keep the front of the book in mind when reading the back of the book, so many things become revealed. So many things make so much more sense. You see things like Paul using Exodus 34 as a simile, instead of coming to a conclusion he is saying the OT is something veiled. Context is important.

Thought for Today: Monday October 24:
We must learn to live above our circumstances. This requires focus time with Elohiym, the One Who overcame the world. Trouble and distress are woven into the very fabric of this perishing world. Only Ruach HaKodesh’s Life in us can empower us to face this endless flow of problems with good cheer. As we sit quietly in YHVH’s Presence, He shines Peace into our trouble minds and hearts. Little by little, we are freed from earthly shackles and lifted up above our circumstances. We gain His Perspective on our lives, enabling us to distinguish between what is important and what is not. Thus, let us rest in His Presence, receiving Joy that no-one can take away from us.
