Recently, the baseball World Series happened. The team I have rooted for since childhood was in it. I only watched about 3 innings of one game. Why?
I don't really care about them any more. Since coming to my current walk, I have found I have dropped quite a bit. There are several things I used to care a lot about, but now just seem trivial.
Politics, TV shows, movies, books, sports, comics, etc... Things I would wait and anticipate when a new release was coming out. Things I would stay up to date with the latest information. Things I would geek out for and buy merch to wear and have. I just gave them all up.
While thinking about this, knowing "my team" was in the World Series and I wasn't watching, a verse came to mind:
Matthew 6:24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
While the context of what Jesus/Yeshua was speaking about he states at the end: God and money, I believe this can play out in other ways as well.
While I was into baseball, I was really into my team. When it was political season, I was really into my party. When the new season of my TV show came out, I was making sure I was available for it. And so on...
I can't say that during this time that I had the same zeal for God or His Word. Sure, in my mind they were first, but in reality they weren't.
Today, I can say I have a different story. Those things that mattered to me so much, don't. My course has been corrected and I am now focused on what I should have been all along. I have a new "team" to focus on.
Can I still be involved in those things? From time to time, sure. That is part of why I only watched 3 innings of one game. I found I had more important things to do.
