In #exodus 16:25-26 the manna didn't come on #sabbath for anybody, whether native or non-native. The Sabbath applied to everyone equally. The Sabbath is also discussed in this passage as a familiar thing. Moses didn't have to explain to anyone what the Sabbath was, so we can know that the Hebrews knew about it before the Exodus and Sinai. Shabbat is for everyone, not just the Hebrews and not just those to whom the Law was given at Sinai.

But Joshua did not draw back his hand with which he stretched out the javelin until he had devoted all the inhabitants of Ai to destruction.
Joshua 8:26 ESV

Joshua's javelin is reminiscent of Moses' staff. It was a symbol of the authority that God had given him. As long as he held that authority up and not his own, Israel would be victorious. The difference between Moses' staff and Joshua's javelin is that the former is a tool of peace, while the latter is a weapon of war. There's a place for both in God's kingdom.

I never really noticed that he held his javelin out similar to how Moshe held his staff out. Thank you for making that connection.

My fingers are too short to make bar chords on a wide neck guitar.

Even with God providing manna, Israel had to work six days out of seven if they wanted to eat. What do we have to complain about?

The Sabbath teaches us to be proactive, to prepare for the future. The first Sabbath-related command was given before Sinai in Exodus 16:22-24. If you're unsure about whether or how much of God's #torah to keep, consider starting with #sabbath. Don't worry about getting it perfect or about the complex rules the rabbis have piled onto a day of rest. Just relax and keep it simple.

So true. It was actually investigating the Sabbath that brought me to faith as I learned that the Bible wasn't really as it was preached to me in the church.

I read the post at your link. Good thoughts there. I especially like the following:

Torah is both a law of life and a law of death. It’s both, depending only on how you use it. If you keep it, trusting in God’s grace to cover our flaws and inevitable failures, you keep a law of life and liberty. If you refuse to keep it, whether by trusting in your own power to keep it or by simply refusing to even try, you will instead be yoked under a law of sin and death.

Lily Portion for Today: Thursday January 25

Fathers and mothers, teach your children that prayer is not a magic formula which they can use to make YHVH Elohiym fulfil their desires, but that prayer is the only way of being transformed into the persons, Adonai wants them to be. (Prayer: Father, grant my children sensitive spirits so that they shall always know Your will for their lives. Teach them to be still in Your presence, amein)
