Elijah and Elisha "went down to Bethel" from Gilgal in 2 Kings 2:2, but Bethel is actually "up" from Gilgal. We usually think of "down" as either to the south or down hill, but the ancient Hebrews also used these terms with political and religious connotations. For example, one would go "up to Jerusalem" no matter where he started from or "down from Jerusalem" no matter where he was going, since that's where God chose to place his name in the Promised Land. Since the false temple of the northern kingdom of Israel was at Bethel, the writer of Kings might have been using "down" as an insult. If Jerusalem is up from everywhere, Bethel must be down from everywhere. The counter to this is that v23 says they went "up" to Bethel from Jericho. Maybe Jericho was even lower in the spiritual hierarchy?
Don't preserve the idols and temples of pagans. Don't admire them. Just destroy them. Whatever historical or artistic value they may appear to hold is more than offset by their spiritual defilement.
Our churches are so thoroughly infected with pagan imagery and practice that we rarely even know it. Do all things God's way, not your way and not the pagan way. Don't carry over your ancestors' pagan traditions into the worship of YHWH. "Conversions" don't justify incorporating paganism into the worship of the true God. God understands how syncretism can be used to make the Church more seeker-friendly, yet he still commanded us not to compromise in this way.

Daily Prayer
Blessed are You Adonai our YHVH, for You have created light to dispel the darkness and have shone in our hearts to give the light of knowledge of the glory of YHVH in the face of Yeshua our Moshiach. We rejoice that all power and might come from You. Loving Abba, we pray for all who do not know, who do not love You and those who have hardened their hearts against You. We pray for all whose life is joyless or governed by rules rather than love. May Your people be willing to accept and welcome all who come seeking You and Your love. Teach us to be generous in our dealings with each other. We give thanks for the many talents and abilities of Your people. We rejoice in each other’s gifts and uniqueness. We pray for all who are restricted by tyranny or the dominance of others. We pray for all who are in refugee camps or are homeless. We pray for all who feel unloved and neglected. We thank You for our own homes and the love and acceptance that is there. We pray for homes where life is oppressive or adventure smothered. We pray for all who are leaving home and their loved ones for the first time. We give thanks for homes where there are new born life and where Your love is growing. Loving Abba, we pray for all who walk in darkness and live in fear. We pray especially for those who are persecuted, abused or neglected. We pray for those who are depressed and lonely and all who are struggling to survive. We pray for all who are ill, with a disability, injured or on their death bed. We pray for the victims of war and especially crime and violence. We ask that You forgive us our sins, wrong mindsets and wrong words. We thank You for this night and ask if it is in Your will to keep us safe. We pray this in the Name of our Adonai Yeshua Moshiach, amein.
