The death of the wicked isn't punitive so much as it's instructive. If God kills a man for his sins, he dies so that the living will see it and learn from it. We're supposed to learn from their deaths. Conversely, don't boast so much in the victories, life, blessings, and skills that God gives you, but in the God who gives them.
Three things that God loves:
1) Graciousness and generosity
2) Justice and mercy
3) Obedience to Torah

This is advice to a king in training concerning the dispensation of rewards and promotions. If you want to maintain your authority and the loyalty of your people, if you want your ventures to succeed, don't reward fools or promote the incompetent over the competent. Not even for political points.
