INTERCESSION OF MOSHIACH

The intercession of Moshiach is Yeshua’s act of asking YHVH the Father to save, help and sustain people on earth. The Hebrew meaning of the word [to make intercession] comes from a root meaning [to strike.] Thus, the image is of someone [striking] somebody else with a request. Isaiah’s [servant of Adonai] is described in this way: He bore the sin of many and made intercession for the transgressors --Isaiah 53:12. In Greek, the verb meant to meet; approach; or appeal. In literature written between the two Testaments, that word was used to mean personally petitioning an official to gain a favour; -- for example, 2 Maccabeus 4:8. The noun form of the word is translated in the New Testament both as intercession -- 1 Timothy 2:1 and as prayer -- 1 Timothy 4:5. Theologians generally view intercession as the second part of Moshiach’s high priestly work. First, He made sacrifice for sin through His suffering and death on the cross -- 1 Timothy 2:5-6, now He is in heaven as our Intercessor before YHVH. In the Old Testament, one of the priest’s jobs was to petition YHVH on behalf of the people. In particular, on the annual Day of Atonement, the high priest carried the blood of the sin offering into the Most Holy Place, sanctified the sacred place with incense and sprinkled the sacrificial blood on and around the mercy seat -- Leviticus 16:11-19. Thus, after Moshiach offered Himself on the cross as the sacrifice for sins, He ascended to the Father and entered the heavenly sanctuary, where He now represents His people -- Hebrews 7:25.

Moshiach’s Intercession On Earth:

Yeshua Moshiach also interceded on earth, as He encouraged His disciples to do -- Luke 18:1. Scripture often shows Yeshua in prayer. For example, Yeshua interceded at the grave of His friend Lazarus -- John 11:41-42. Yeshua prayed all night on a mountain before selecting the twelve apostles -- Luke 6:12-13. After warning His disciple Peter that satan had plans for him, Yeshua said to Peter, -- I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail -- Luke 22:32. Yeshua’s first Words on the cross were a prayer for those who had persecuted Him -- Luke 23:34. The high priestly prayer recorded in -- John 17 provides the most complete example of an intercessory prayer by Yeshua. The basis of His petition was His intimate relationship with His heavenly Father -- John 17:5, 8.

He prays for:

1 -- Himself, that He might glorify the Father and complete the work He had been sent to accomplish -- John 17:1-5.
2 -- His disciples, who were chosen to spread the gospel after His departure -- John 17:8-9.
3 -- The entire family of believers -- John 17:20.
4 -- The unity of YHVH’s people -- John 17:11, 21.
5 -- Their joy in spite of hardships and discouragement -- John 17:13.
6 -- Their preservation from evil -- John 17:15.
7 -- Their sanctification by the Word of YHVH -- John 17:17.
8 -- Their eternal fellowship with Moshiach -- John 17:24.

Moshiach’s Intercession In Heaven:

Moshiach’s intercession for His people begun on earth, is continued in heaven. The Epistle to the Hebrews describes Yeshua Moshiach as a heavenly Priest, of which the Old Testament priests were only symbols. During His earthly life, Yeshua Himself said; Everyone who acknowledges Me before men, I also will acknowledge before My Father Who is in heaven -- Matthew 10:32. His continuing intercession is recognized in such New Testament phrases as; through Yeshua Moshiach -- Romans 1:8; Romans 16:27; 1 Peter 2:5; through Him -- Colossians 3:17; Hebrews 13:15 and in the Name of our Adonai Yeshua Moshiach -- Ephesians 5:20. Four New Testament texts describe Yeshua’s heavenly intercession in some detail. The apostle Paul spoke of Moshiach at the right hand of YHVH, Who indeed intercedes for us -- Romans 8:34. The writer of Hebrews affirmed that Moshiach is able for all time to save those who draw near to YHVH through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them -- Hebrews 7:25. Further, Moshiach has entered into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of YHVH on our behalf -- Hebrews 9:24. The apostle John also described that ministry: If any one does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Yeshua Moshiach the righteous -- 1 John 2:1. The Greek word for advocate meant a legal counsellor who appeared before a judge to plead for a client. John thus pictured the ascended Adonai as appearing before YHVH on behalf of His people, presenting His own obedience and suffering as the reasons why the believer should be forgiven.

The Way Intercession Works:

Moshiach’s heavenly intercession is in one way, already done [His redemptive work has been completed] and in another way, continues [He continues to care for YHVH’s people. Thus, Moshiach’s intercession includes:

1 -- His presence with the Father as the reason for each believer’s justification -- Hebrews 9:24.
2 -- His denial of the accusations Satan makes against each believer -- Romans 8:33; Revelation 12:10.
3 -- His claim that each believer has the right to come near to YHVH -- Hebrews 4:14-16.
4 -- His relaying of each believer’s prayers to YHVH.

The heavenly Father’s response is to give believers a full range of spiritual blessings. In the words of the Puritan John Owen [1616-1683]: The intercession of Moshiach… is His continual appearance for us in the presence of YHVH, representing the efficacy of His oblation, accompanied with tender care, love and desires for the welfare, supply, deliverance and salvation of the Church. Moshiach is said to pray for all people everywhere -- Isaiah 53:12; Matthew 26:28. More specifically, He prays for His own redeemed community, the Church -- John 14:16; John 17:9, 20; Hebrews 4:15-16. Moshiach also prays for the specific needs of individual believers -- Luke 22:31-32; 1 John 2:1. We grew up with the teaching and we teach our children and other people: to follow Yeshua’s example. Therefore, taken in account all of the above, it is the right thing to do to intercede for each other by praying and laying hands on each other and where needed, to fast in prayer for one another. Let Yeshua Moshiach’s Light of Life shine through each of you by doing what is right.

Does anyone other than me remember when you went to church and stood to pray but sat to sing? That was in the Methodist church my family went to in the late 60's and early 70's.

Psalm 10;4, “The wicked people are too proud. They do not look for God. There is no room for God in their thoughts.” The people who repent will always try to be more close to the Creator, they will seek His face.
